The Tigers have been criticized for their center fielder issues all season long. But do the Tigers really have a bad center fielder roster? No. Both of their center fielders have played great this season. Mikie Mahtook and Alex Presley are both very good players that are majorly underrated. Here’s why.
Mikie Mahtook was drafted by the Flordia Marlins in the 39th round of the 2008 MLB draft, but he stayed at LSU to play college baseball. He was then drafted by the Rays 31st overall in the 2011 draft. He played in the minor leagues until April 10, 2015, when he was called up to the Rays. He was traded to the Tigers on January 18, 2017. This year he has had a great season, hitting .293 with 6 homers and 21 RBI’s in 174 at-bats. He could be a great centerfielder if he keeps hitting with a good average.
The other centerfielder for the Tigers is Alex Presley. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2006 draft. He made his MLB debut on September 8, 2010. He was traded to the Minnesota Twins about 3 years later on August 31, 2013. He was then claimed off waivers by the Houston Astros, and then played for the Milwaukee Brewers before he was signed by the Tigers. Presley has also had a great season for the Tigers this year. He is hitting .326 with 1 HR, 11 RBI, and 31 hits in 95 at-bats.
Both of the center fielders for the Tigers are hitting well this season, and both of them could be good for years to come. But it is still smart for the Tigers to sign a veteran center-fielder so that the current prospects don’t stop playing hard. The veteran can also give the other players plenty of tips.
